Your daily work in the central and decentralised administrations, as well as other operational areas at the university, will continually present you with new challenges during your training and in your future professional life, whether through new tasks or technological innovations.
For many years, the Human Resources Development department at JGU has offered further education events for trainees to support you throughout your apprenticeship.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has committed itself to promoting a collaborative work environment among its employees. By establishing a Conflict Counselling Office (only in german), the university provides its staff with the opportunity to seek assistance from an independent body for conflicts at their university workplace that can no longer be resolved by the parties involved.
As part of the PE Continuing Education Programme, regular courses on the topic "Dealing with Conflicts" (only in german) are offered for employees and managers.
We offer our trainees a variety of further education events, and we particularly recommend the training events specifically designed for apprentices by the Human Resources Development department. However, you are of course also free to participate in additional events offered across disciplines for all employees.
Both the Training Management and the supervisors from the respective departments/areas will gladly support you in participating in a further education event; therefore, you should discuss your plans in advance with the Training Management or with the supervisor of the respective department/area.
Here you can find the current further education programme (only in german).

Fundamentally, the training relationship ends with the completion of the final examination or upon expiration of the training contract. Additionally, termination may occur through notice of termination or by mutual agreement (dissolution contract).
A Notice of Termination is a unilateral declaration of intent that requires receipt. This means that it takes effect as soon as it is delivered to the addressee.
- A notice of termination can be issued by either the employee or the employer, in the form of an ordinary or extraordinary termination.
- In the case of an ordinary termination, the corresponding notice period as stipulated in the training contract must be observed.
- An extraordinary termination can only be effected in the event of a severe breach of contractual obligations under the employment contract.
A Dissolution Contract , on the other hand, represents a mutually agreed-upon termination of the training relationship, requiring the consent of the Training Officer and the respective Institutional Leadership.
- A request for dissolution can only be submitted by the trainee.
- The request requires approval by the supervisor and must be submitted via the official channel (preferably by email).
- A dissolution contract can be concluded on any desired date and does not require adherence to notice periods.
Please feel free to use our Application for Dissolution of the Training Relationship (only in german).
Trainees in Rhineland-Palatinate have a legal entitlement to educational leave with continued payment of remuneration by the employer or principal for events related to vocational and societal further education, provided that no compelling service interests oppose participation.
A prerequisite for claiming educational leave is a minimum 6-month training relationship with JGU Mainz.
For which events is educational leave possible?
An application for educational leave is possible for events related to vocational or socio-political further education. Exceptions include events that serve recreational, entertainment, or general leisure activities.
Events for vocational further education are not limited to the previously practiced activity and also include the impartation of key qualifications and orientation knowledge.
A prerequisite for the possibility of educational leave is that the respective event is recognised as a further education event under the Educational Leave Act. Through the search portal of the MWWK (only in german), you can receive up-to-date information on whether such recognition exists.
How many workdays can I be granted leave?
The entitlement to educational leave for a 5-day workweek is 10 workdays within a period of 2 consecutive calendar years, starting with an odd calendar year - e.g., 2019/2020. If the working hours are regularly distributed over fewer than 5 days a week, the entitlement is reduced accordingly. Educational leave can be granted for one or more events, up to the maximum number of leave days in the respective period. For trainees, the educational leave entitlement is 5 workdays per calendar year, but only for participation in socio-political further education events.
How do I apply for educational leave?
Please submit your written application for educational leave to the PA 5 department via your supervisor at least 6 weeks before the event (preferably by email). You can either submit an informal request or use the MWWK´s template form0 (only in german). Please note that you must attach proof of the educational provider's recognition of the event to your application. You will receive a written decision regarding the approval or rejection of your educational leave.
The employer or principal can reject participation in the recognised event at the desired date, with the involvement of the personnel council, in writing up to 3 weeks before the event, if compelling service interests oppose it.
Participation in the educational event, for which leave has been granted, must be proven to the employer or principal by a confirmation from the event organiser immediately following the educational leave.
The event is associated with costs; will I be reimbursed?
Participation fees, travel, and accommodation costs, etc., will not be reimbursed and must be borne by the trainees themselves.
The only entitlement against the employer or principal is the continuation of payment of the training allowance for the period of granted educational leave.
You can find the current training plan by accessing the internal trainees-portal (only in german).

Is Rosenmontag a day off at JGU?
Rosenmontag is a regular working day for all employees. Leave or a flexible day off is to be granted upon corresponding application. This regulation, agreed upon with the Personnel Council, replaces the provision in § 10.3 of the Flexible Working Hours Agreement from 9 October 2012, which stated that Rosenmontag is a day off for employees in Mainz upon compensating for the missed working time, and applies to all employees until further notice.
For trainees, the weekly working hours amount to 39 hours and are generally distributed over a 5-day workweek from Monday to Friday. The time frame for the daily start of work is specified by the respective training department.
Time recording is conducted via the electronic time recording system Gisbo. All information regarding flexible working hours and time recording can be found in the following guide (only in german)
What breaks am I required to take?
Work must be interrupted by rest breaks of at least 30 minutes for a working period exceeding six hours up to nine hours, and by a total of at least 45 minutes for a working period exceeding nine hours. A break is considered to be an interruption of work of at least 15 minutes. For minor apprentices, the Youth Employment Protection Act applies, stipulating that for a working period of 4.5 to 6 hours, a rest break of 30 minutes must be taken, and for a working period exceeding six hours, a rest break of 60 minutes must be observed.
How many hours am I allowed to work daily?
The daily maximum working time is 10 hours. For minor apprentices, the Youth Employment Protection Act applies, stipulating that the daily working time must not exceed 8 hours. Exceptions to this are outlined in § 8 of the Youth Employment Protection Act (JArbSchG), which permits an increase in daily working time to a maximum of 8.5 hours, provided that the working time on Fridays is correspondingly shortened. Special provisions, such as those in the Maternity Protection Act, must be strictly observed.
Is a doctor's visit considered working time?
For attending medical appointments, our flexible working hours policy provides the opportunity to schedule these outside of working hours. Regardless of the nature of the illness, the time spent on medical appointments does not constitute working time. The only exceptions to this rule are the mandatory prenatal examinations prescribed by the Maternity Protection Act during pregnancy.
Which events are considered working time?
The following are considered working time: participation in staff meetings and other official events, such as internal university elections and events within the framework of the staff development program.
